Aberdare National Park is a spectacular highland wilderness covering 767 square kilometers of misty bamboo forests, waterfalls, and moorlands in Central Kenya. Famous for its iconic tree lodges where wildlife viewing happens from elevated decks overlooking floodlit waterholes, Aberdare offers a completely unique safari experience unlike anywhere else in Africa.
Aberdare is world-famous for its tree lodges - unique accommodations built on stilts or in tree canopies overlooking waterholes where wildlife gather throughout day and night. This revolutionary concept allows 24-hour wildlife viewing from the comfort of your lodge.
The original and most famous tree lodge, Treetops holds a special place in history. In 1952, Princess Elizabeth of England was staying at Treetops when her father, King George VI, passed away. She left Treetops as Queen Elizabeth II. As the saying goes, "She climbed a tree a Princess and climbed down a Queen."
Built in the branches overlooking a waterhole, Treetops offers intimate wildlife viewing as elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and forest hogs visit the salt lick and waterhole throughout the night. Gentle buzzers in guest rooms alert visitors when rare animals arrive.
Designed to resemble Noah's Ark, this iconic lodge features multiple viewing decks, a ground-level bunker for close-up photography, and comfortable viewing lounges. Wildlife gathers at the floodlit waterhole and salt lick 24 hours a day.
Night viewing is magical as elephants emerge from the darkness, buffalo gather in hundreds, and elusive nocturnal animals like giant forest hogs and leopards make appearances. The lodge operates a buzzer system to wake guests for special sightings.
Tree lodge experiences are unlike any other safari. You arrive mid-afternoon, settle in, then simply wait and watch as wildlife comes to you. The anticipation builds as darkness falls and animals materialize in the floodlights.
The Aberdare ecosystem supports unique highland wildlife adapted to cool temperatures and dense forests.
Over 250 bird species including:
Beyond wildlife, Aberdare is renowned for dramatic landscapes and cascading waterfalls.
At 273 meters (896 feet), Karuru is Kenya's highest waterfall. The falls plunge down the eastern slopes in three spectacular drops surrounded by dense forest. Viewing platforms offer breathtaking vistas.
Plummeting 305 meters, Gura Falls is even taller than Karuru though less accessible. The falls cascade down the escarpment in one thundering drop visible from designated viewpoints.
The most accessible waterfall, Chania Falls offers beautiful picnic sites and easy walking trails through the surrounding forest.
Moorlands: At higher elevations, the forest gives way to sweeping open moorlands covered in tussock grass and giant heather. These otherworldly landscapes offer spectacular views and unique hiking opportunities.
Bamboo Forests: Dense bamboo zones create cathedral-like canopies where elephant paths wind through the jungle. These forests are magical and mysterious.
Wildlife Viewing: Best - animals concentrate around waterholes making tree lodge viewing spectacular
Weather: Drier but still misty; clearer skies for photography
Roads: More passable, though 4x4 still essential
Note: Even dry season can be wet in the highlands - bring rain gear
Wildlife Viewing: Animals more dispersed but still excellent
Weather: Heavy rains possible; waterfalls at their most spectacular
Advantages: Lush green landscapes, fewer visitors, lower rates
Challenges: Muddy roads; some trails may be impassable
Temperature: Aberdare is cool year-round. Expect daytime temperatures of 10-15°C (50-59°F) and nighttime temperatures near freezing, especially at higher elevations. Pack warm layers!
The quintessential Aberdare experience. Spend 24 hours at a tree lodge watching wildlife visit the waterhole. Early evening and nighttime often bring the most exciting action as forest giants emerge from the darkness.
Morning and afternoon game drives through forests and moorlands offer chances to spot elephants, buffalo, bushbuck, and if lucky, the rare bongo. The park's 4x4-only roads wind through spectacular scenery.
Visit Karuru, Gura, and Chania Falls. Short walks to viewpoints offer spectacular photo opportunities. Some lodges organize picnic lunches at waterfall sites.
Guided nature walks through bamboo forests and along mountain streams reveal smaller creatures, birds, and plants. Morning walks often encounter fresh elephant tracks and duikers.
The cold mountain streams support rainbow and brown trout. Fishing permits available at park gates. Aberdare Country Club organizes fishing trips.
For adventurous visitors, hikes to the moorlands and peaks offer spectacular views. Ol Donyo Lesatima (4,001m) and Kinangop (3,906m) are challenging but rewarding climbs requiring guides.
Transfers to tree lodges typically originate from base hotels:
From Nairobi: 180 km, approximately 3.5 hours via Nyeri. The journey passes through rich agricultural highlands with scenic coffee and tea plantations. Most visitors use the Ruhuruini Gate or Kiandongoro Gate.
From Nyeri: Base hotels are in Nyeri or Mweiga. Tree lodges provide 4x4 transfers from base hotels, as the park requires high-clearance vehicles.
Charter flights can land at airstrips near Nyeri. Most tree lodge packages include road transfers from Nairobi as part of the experience.
