The Flamingo Spectacle

Lake Nakuru is world-renowned for its flamingos. At peak times, up to 2 million lesser and greater flamingos create one of nature's most breathtaking sights - a shimmering pink carpet stretching across the alkaline lake. The flamingos feed on abundant algae and plankton in the shallow soda lake, creating spectacular photo opportunities from viewpoints like Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill.

While flamingo numbers fluctuate based on water levels and food availability, Lake Nakuru remains one of Africa's most reliable flamingo viewing destinations year-round.

Kenya's Premier Rhino Sanctuary

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the largest black and white rhino sanctuaries in Kenya. With a population of over 70 endangered black rhinos and 35 southern white rhinos, the park offers exceptional rhino viewing opportunities. The intensive protection program has made Lake Nakuru a conservation success story.

Rhino sightings are common throughout the park, particularly in the southern section near the lake shore and around Nakuru township entrance.

Wildlife Beyond Flamingos

Lake Nakuru hosts diverse wildlife including lions, leopards, buffalo, Rothschild giraffes, zebras, warthogs, baboons, and over 50 species of mammals. The park is also excellent for bird watching with 450+ recorded species including African fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants, and numerous waterbirds.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Nakuru is excellent year-round. The dry season (July-October, January-February) offers easier game viewing, while the wet season (March-May, November-December) brings lush scenery and peak bird migration. Flamingo numbers are typically highest June through March.
