We travelled with our three children aged 6, 9, and 12, and this was hands down the best holiday we have ever taken as a family. Our guide was phenomenal with the kids — he turned every animal encounter into a mini nature lesson, and by the end our youngest could identify zebras, wildebeest, and impalas on sight. The boat ride at Naivasha was a huge hit. Book it. You won't regret it.

We recently enjoyed a private safari trip with Abner Safaris. The itinerary was perfectly tailored to our interests, the accommodation was comfortable and pleasant, and the entire trip struck a great balance between adventure and relaxation. Our children were engaged throughout and talked about the lions and elephants for months afterward.

As a Kenyan family we've always wanted to do a proper multi-park safari, and Abner Safaris delivered it perfectly. The four-destination structure meant we never stayed long enough to get bored but always stayed long enough to feel the spirit of each place. The Masai Mara was the undisputed highlight — watching a pride of lions from just 15 metres away was simply extraordinary.

8-Day Family Adventure Safari Itinerary

This itinerary is designed to give families the perfect balance of excitement and ease — enough wildlife action to keep everyone engaged, enough variety to keep every day feeling fresh, and enough flexibility to ensure the pace suits every member of the group, from the youngest explorers to grandparents. Each park brings something completely different to the table, building a journey that unfolds progressively from Amboseli's open grandeur to the extraordinary spectacle of the Masai Mara.

Your family adventure safari begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, heading south toward Amboseli National Park, where wide open spaces and the distant peak of Mount Kilimanjaro set the scene for a memorable journey. You arrive in time for lunch and a short rest, giving everyone time to settle in before heading out on your first afternoon game drive. The excitement builds quickly as elephants, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest appear across the plains, and your guide keeps the pace relaxed, explaining animal behaviour and answering curious questions from younger explorers. As the sun begins to set and the sky turns warm with colour, you return to camp for dinner and your first night in the African wilderness.

Family Highlight: First elephant sightings, Kilimanjaro backdrop, guide Q&A for the kids

Overnight: Family lodge in Amboseli National Park

You head out in the morning when the air is cool and the animals are most active, spending the day exploring different parts of Amboseli and learning how the ecosystem works, from the swamps that attract elephants to the open plains where grazers gather. The focus is on discovery and fun, with plenty of stops to watch animal behaviour, take photos, and let the children absorb the experience at their own pace. After lunch and a rest at the lodge, you return to the park in the late afternoon for another gentle game drive, enjoying the golden light and the chance to spot animals you may have missed earlier, before ending the day with a relaxed family dinner and storytelling under the stars.

Family Highlight: Ecosystem learning, animal behaviour spotting, starlit family dinner

Overnight: Family lodge in Amboseli National Park

After breakfast, you begin the drive toward the Great Rift Valley, watching the scenery change as you travel north to Lake Naivasha. You arrive around midday and after lunch enjoy a boat ride on the lake, which is always a highlight for families, offering close but safe views of hippos and a wide variety of birds. Later, a guided walk on Crescent Island lets everyone stretch their legs and walk among giraffes and zebras in a calm and open environment, turning the day into a gentle outdoor adventure that combines learning and fun. You spend the evening at your lakeside lodge, sharing stories of the day and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Family Highlight: Hippos from the boat at eye level, walking with giraffes on Crescent Island

Overnight: Lakeside lodge at Lake Naivasha

You leave after breakfast for the short drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving in time for a game drive through one of Kenya's most scenic and compact wildlife parks. The park is famous for its birdlife and for being a safe home for both black and white rhinos, making it an exciting and educational stop for children and adults alike. You spend the day spotting flamingos along the lakeshore, watching giraffes move through the trees, and searching for rhinos grazing in the open, while your guide shares stories and facts that bring the landscape to life. In the late afternoon, you head to your lodge to relax and enjoy a quiet family evening.

Family Highlight: Rhino spotting, flamingo flocks, kids' wildlife facts from the guide

Overnight: Lodge at Lake Nakuru

After breakfast, you set out for the Masai Mara, driving through beautiful countryside until the land opens into vast, rolling savannah. You arrive in time for lunch and a short rest before heading out on your first Mara game drive, where the sheer number of animals often feels like stepping into a real-life nature documentary. Lions, elephants, and large herds of zebra and wildebeest provide plenty of excitement, and the open spaces make it easy for everyone to see and enjoy the wildlife. As the sun sets, you return to camp for dinner and a cosy night, with the sounds of the bush all around you.

Family Highlight: First lion sightings, vast herds, real-life nature documentary atmosphere

Overnight: Family tented camp in Masai Mara National Reserve

You spend the entire day exploring the Masai Mara, starting with a morning game drive when predators are often active and the light is soft and gentle. The adventure continues through the day with a picnic lunch in the bush, followed by more game viewing in the afternoon, giving the family time to really appreciate the scale and variety of wildlife in the reserve. Your guide keeps the experience engaging and safe, making sure the children stay interested and comfortable while learning about animal tracks, behaviour, and the balance of nature. You return to camp in the evening, happily tired after a full day of exploration.

Family Highlight: Picnic lunch in the bush, animal tracks lesson, predator sightings

Overnight: Family tented camp in Masai Mara National Reserve

Your final full day in the Mara is more flexible and relaxed, allowing the family to choose how to spend it, whether that means a longer morning game drive, a slower day with more time at camp, or focusing on specific animals the children especially want to see again. The day is about enjoying the adventure together, taking photos, sharing laughs, and soaking in the wide open spaces and big skies that make the Mara so special. In the afternoon, you head out for one last game drive to say goodbye to the savannah, before returning to camp for a farewell dinner and your final night in the wild.

Family Highlight: Flexible family day, kids choose the adventure, farewell dinner together

Overnight: Family tented camp in Masai Mara (final night)

After breakfast, you begin the journey back to Nairobi, travelling through rolling hills and farmland and slowly returning to city life. You arrive in the afternoon, marking the end of a family adventure safari that has combined wildlife, learning, and shared experiences across some of Kenya's most beautiful landscapes, leaving everyone with stories, photos, and memories that will last a lifetime.

End of safari. Airport transfers to Nairobi JKIA or Wilson Airport available on request.
