Witness nature's greatest spectacle on this focused 5-day Great Migration safari in Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve — available exclusively from July to October when the wildebeest and zebra herds are at their peak. Over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra thunder across the Mara plains in a perpetual cycle of survival, with the dramatic Mara River crossings at the very heart of the action. You will spend four full days immersed in this extraordinary annual event, tracking the herds across open savannah, waiting at key crossing points as thousands of animals plunge into crocodile-filled water, and following predators — lion, cheetah, leopard, and hyena — that shadow the migration for easy hunting opportunities. This is raw, unscripted Africa at its most powerful.

This focused 5-day itinerary is designed around the natural rhythm of the Great Migration, maximising your time in the Masai Mara across four consecutive days to give you the best possible chance of witnessing the iconic Mara River crossings while also experiencing the full breadth of the migration — from vast moving herds and predator encounters to quieter moments of grazing, dust, and golden-hour light across the open savannah.
Your Great Migration safari begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, driving west through the Rift Valley and into the rolling plains of the Masai Mara, where the sense of space and scale immediately signals that you have entered one of Africa's greatest wildlife arenas. You arrive in time for lunch and a short rest before heading out on your first afternoon game drive, when the light is soft and the plains are alive with movement. Vast herds of wildebeest and zebra stretch across the horizon, and you spend the afternoon positioning yourself for strong compositions that show both the immensity of the migration and the drama of individual animals moving through the landscape, while keeping an eye out for lions and cheetahs that often follow the herds. As the sun sets over the savannah, you return to camp with your first taste of the spectacle and your first set of powerful images.
Overnight: Tented camp in Masai Mara National Reserve
You set out before sunrise, when the air is cool and the light is perfect for photography, heading toward areas where the herds are most concentrated and where predator activity is most likely. The morning is spent tracking the migration, watching thousands of wildebeest and zebra move in long columns across the plains, occasionally breaking into dramatic runs that create dust, tension, and dynamic scenes. You pause for a picnic lunch in the bush, then continue exploring in the afternoon, searching for river crossings or hunting action, and capturing the contrast between calm grazing scenes and sudden bursts of movement. As the day fades into golden light, you work on silhouettes, backlit dust, and wide landscape shots before returning to camp, fully aware that no two migration days are ever the same.
Wildlife Focus: Wildebeest columns, zebra herds, predator tracking, dust clouds & golden-hour silhouettes
Overnight: Tented camp in Masai Mara National Reserve
Another early start takes you deeper into the heart of the migration corridors, where rivers and predator territories create the most intense and emotional scenes of the safari. You spend the morning waiting patiently at key crossing points, watching the herds gather, hesitate, and sometimes plunge into the water in a chaotic surge that defines the Great Migration. Crocodiles, fast currents, and the pressure of thousands of animals combine to create moments of raw drama, while lions and hyenas lurk nearby, adding constant tension to the scene. In the afternoon, you continue following the herds across the plains, shifting your focus between wide shots that show scale and tighter frames that capture fear, determination, and survival in individual animals, before returning to camp as the sky turns warm and the plains fall quiet.
Wildlife Focus: Mara River crossings, crocodile ambushes, lion & hyena activity, survival moments
Overnight: Tented camp in Masai Mara National Reserve
You head out again at first light, but this day is about deepening the story rather than just chasing spectacle, spending more time with selected herds, predator groups, or specific landscapes to build a more complete visual narrative. You may focus on the relationship between predators and prey, the way the herds shape the land, or the quieter moments of rest and grazing that balance the chaos of the crossings. After a relaxed lunch and some rest, you return to the field in the late afternoon to take advantage of the last golden light, working on creative compositions, dramatic skies, and layered scenes of animals moving across the endless savannah. You return to camp for your final night in the Mara, with a memory card full of images that together tell the story of one of nature's greatest spectacles.
Wildlife Focus: Predator-prey dynamics, herd behaviour, landscape storytelling & golden-hour compositions
Overnight: Tented camp in Masai Mara (final night)
After breakfast, you begin the journey back to Nairobi, leaving the open plains behind and retracing your route through the Rift Valley and its dramatic escarpments. You arrive in the afternoon, marking the end of an intense and unforgettable Great Migration safari that has immersed you in the movement, tension, and beauty of the Masai Mara at its most dramatic, and leaving you with lasting memories and a powerful collection of wildlife photographs.
End of safari. Airport transfers available on request.
This 5-day safari is based entirely within the Masai Mara National Reserve in south-western Kenya, one of the most wildlife-rich ecosystems on Earth and the Kenyan stage of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. The reserve borders the Serengeti in Tanzania, and the famous Mara River — where the iconic river crossings take place — runs through its heart. Camps are strategically positioned close to the main crossing points and migration corridors for maximum wildlife access during the July–October season.

18 September, 2025 08:30AMWords cannot fully describe watching 500 wildebeest launch themselves into the Mara River at once. Our guide had incredible instinct for where and when the crossings would happen — we witnessed three in two days. Abner Safaris positioned us perfectly every single time. I've done safaris all over Africa and this was the most raw, emotional wildlife experience of my life.

4 August, 2025 14:15PMWe saw a cheetah hunt on Day 2 and a full Mara River crossing on Day 3 — both in the same trip! The guide knew the migration routes better than anyone we've worked with, and the camp was beautifully positioned right along the river. A truly bucket-list experience, and Abner Safaris delivered it flawlessly.

21 July, 2025 10:45AMThe sheer scale of the migration is something no documentary prepares you for. Horizon-to-horizon wildebeest, lions patrolling the riverbank, crocodiles waiting in the water — it's theatre on a massive scale. Our guide explained the behaviour and ecology throughout, making it educational as well as spectacular. An absolute must-do, and Abner Safaris is the right company to do it with.
